No rush for nuke plant, says Najib
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Government is not in a rush to crystallise Malaysia's nuclear power plan as its viability is still being evaluated.
Fully aware of the repercussions of Japan's nuclear fallout, the Prime Minister said: “I think many countries around the world are going through a re-evaluation and we will leverage on that.
“The Government will make a final decision when the time comes.”
Meanwhile, the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry has begun radiation tests on Malaysia's sea water, rain water and soil.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said the Atomic Energy Licensing Board was conducting the tests to determine the density of Iodine 131 (I-131) and Cesium 137 (Cs-137) radionuclides in the samples of sea water, rain water and soil.
“A report from the International Atomic Energy Agency on March 29 confirmed the situation was still serious at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in Japan,” he said yesterday.
Dr Ongkili said the Malaysian Nuclear Agency would release the results of the analyses of the samples periodically.
The Fukushima Daiichi plant was damaged after a 9.0-magnitude earthquake rocked north-eastern Japan and unleashed a tsunami on March 11, causing more than 10,000 deaths and 20,000 missing persons in the twin disasters.
Meanwhile, the National Council of Profes-sors will publish an analysis of nuclear technology to allay public fear following the Govern-ment's decision to develop the technology and the reactor leak in Japan.
Chairman Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid said the analysis, to be completed in a month, would list the advantages and disadvantages of the technology and prop-osals to increase public understanding. - Bernama

Snatch thief nabbed by passers-by
Police taking the suspect into custodyPETALING JAYA: A motorcyclist was apprehended when he tried to snatch a handbag belonging to a woman at the car park of a shopping complex in Damansara Jaya here.
A motorist who saw the noon incident yesterday cornered the snatch thief before several passers-by joined him and surrounded the culprit. They managed to overpower him and handed him over to the police who arrived shortly after.
The suspect had earlier tried to dash off after failing to grab the woman’s handbag.

MALACCA: Ayer Keroh assemblyman Khoo Phoay Tiong has fallen prey to the oldest trick in the book an April Fool's joke at midnight - after he was embarrassed in a prank.
The 41-year-old, who was at home, said he had received a call from a “Datuk K” on his mobile phone from a private number at midnight.
“The caller, who claimed to be a successful businessmen, had asked for an urgent meeting as he wanted to hand over RM6,000 as donation to Japanese tsunami victims.
“He told me he was confident that his aid would reach the victims if he were to hand the money over to me,” Khoo told The Star.
He said the caller insisted on handing over the donation at a stall in Banda Hilir, and that it would be witnessed by members of the Singaporean media that very night as they had to rush back to the republic the next day.
“The Datuk' told me that there would be a Singapore-registered red Toyota Camry at the stall, and that he had parked his car behind that vehicle.
“He claimed that he and his media friends were having a drink at the stall,” Khoo said, adding that he quickly drove to the meeting point.
However, Khoo said when he reached the stall at 12.30am, a group of people seated at a table paid no attention to him although there was a red car nearby.
“After a few minutes, I decided to ask the group who, among them, wasDatuk K. They gave me funny stares as if I was insane. I only realised I was tricked when the Datuk' called again and screamed April Fool' at me,” he said.
Khoo said he had thought the call was genuine as the person gave details of the charitable work he had carried out in his constituency last month.
“These were needy cases that I had attended to and the caller could describe exactly the places that I had visited last month. So, I believed that he was telling the truth,” he said.
Khoo said he then left the stall, feeling both frustrated and annoyed that he had lost sleep over the call.
“I admit that I was probably overzealous upon hearing that the Singapore media was going to give me coverage and even forgot that it was April Fool's Day,” he said.

India vs Sri Lanka: Bollywood gears up for World Cup final showdown
MUMBAI: All the three Khans will be going to watch India play Sri Lanka in the finals on April 2. Shah Rukh Khan, just after India's batting, said that 260 was not a bad score and if Team India wins "no one can stop me from going to the finals at Wankhede".
Salman Khan, who was partying at Poison and watching the match, said that he had no plans of going for the semifinals. But he said, "I will try and go for the final match. Cricket is a very unpredictable game and with Pakistan in the semifinal I felt India toh gayee."
Aamir Khan was at the semifinal in Mohali. The actor is expected to be at the finals too.
Some other celebrities like Abhishek Bachchan tweeted: "Well done India—diya ghumake."
Arshi Hashmi from Pakistan who works with Women Beyond Borders said, "Well, people are certainly sad but another side to look at it is that the cup will remain in South Asia. The Indian team played very well. It is also important that nobody was talking about Pakistan."
"Once the team started performing well, suddenly the whole country got involved and we really enjoyed the feeling of being one. I hope and pray that this feeling of unity and involvement with the country with positive approach will continue. South Asia will be the World Cup champion and that's the good part," Hashmi added.
The whole country is excited after India beat arch-rivals Pakistan by 29 runs in Wednesday's highly-charged semi-final. A bevy of Bollywood stars had graced the World Cup semifinal clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan.
The Indian cricket team on Thursday left for Mumbai with an eye to win the second World Cup title.
