INFANT FOUND DEAD OF SUSPECTED ABUSE

SUNGAI SIPUT, May 31 (Bernama) -- A nine-month-old baby girl was found dead

with body injuries believed to have been inflicted by her mentally disturbed

parents.

Sungai Siput deputy police chief DSP Ernest John told reporters today that

Norliyana was found wrapped in a sarong in a room of her parents'' house in Taman

Muhibah Jaya here yesterday.

He said that the girl''s uncle found her dead at 2.40am reported to the

police. The body was taken to the Sungai Siput Hospital.

Preliminary investigation showed that the infant''s 38-year-old father, a

burger seller, and her 29-year-old mother both had a history of mental illness.

Police will wait for the autopsy report before classifying the case, John

said

"If the autopsy confirms that the baby died of abuse, her death will be

investigated as a murder case," he said.
