The Health Ministry today instructed Cosway (M) Sdn Bhd to withdraw two Taiwanese food products which contain carcinogens di-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and di-isononyl phthalate (DINP).
Health director-general Datuk Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman also ordered the company's distributors to immediately stop sales of the Oriyen Nutri Grow (Boy) Orange Drink Premix 330g and Oriyen Nutri Grow (Girl) Cranberry Drink Premix 330g, manufactured by Jin Zhuan Lifesciences Enterprise Co Ltd, Taiwan.
He said the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration informed the Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety that the products were imported by Cosway (HK) Ltd.
"The Health Ministry has also noted that the same products were imported by Cosway (M) Sdn Bhd. We have taken samples of these products to be analysed for DEHP," he said in a statement.
"We will release this batch of products should test results show that it is free from DEHP," Dr Hassan added, and advised those who bought affected products not to consume them.
He said that nine other food products from Taiwan which were suspected to be affected were also analysed and found negative for carcinogens.
The products include Uni-President Apple Juice, Guava Juice, Grape Juice and Carambola Juice. The others are New Choice Frugurt Assorted Flavors, Fibrous Jelly White Peach Flavor, Fibrous Jelly Mango Flavor, Fibrous Jelly Grape Flavor and Squez'n Bites, he added.
Dr Hasan said the ministry also monitored other Taiwanese food products confirmed to be free of DEHP which are Melovocom Pickled Strip Cucumber, Master Preserved Chili Bean Curd and Greenmax Yam Nutritious Cereal.
"The public need not worry about the safety of imported food products from Taiwan as we have exercised control on products from the country," he said.
