Miracle man breathes his last

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The 65-year-old man who started breathing two and a half hours after he was pronounced dead 12 days ago has died after his breathing apparatus was removed.
Ng Ba Kia @ Ng Swee Hock (pic) died at his home in Kampung Tok Elong in Tanah Liat here at 10.50am yesterday.
Ng, who is believed to be the country’s first person with the rare Lazarus phenomenon, leaves behind wife Lim Siew Hua, 56, a seamstress, and two sons, Kean Hooi, 27, and Kean Loong, 25.
An ambulance from Seberang Jaya Hospital had earlier taken Ng, a former tile layer, back home and with his family’s consent, an accompanying nurse removed his breathing apparatus.
Just before that, Kean Hooi spoke to his father, telling him that he was now at home and that the family was with him.
“Do not worry about us, we are adults and we can take care of ourselves. You can go in peace,” he said as his teary-eyed family members gathered around.
Lim, 56, said she accepted her husband’s demise as doctors at the hospital had on Sunday advised her to take him home after declaring him brain dead.
Lim said she believed the gods had a reason for giving her husband another 12 days to live after he was first pronounced dead on April 14.
On that day, Ng was rushed to the hospital after he stopped breathing at home.
Doctors performed cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him for 45 minutes but there was no response and he was pronounced dead.
Two and a half hours later, he started breathing again on his own.
“I don’t know what happened to him that day, he had just returned home after having lunch outside. He did not show any signs,” she said.
State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committeechairman Phee Boon Poh said although Ng showed some signs of recovery, he did not regain consciousness while in the Critical Care Unit.
Ng’s remains will be cremated at the Berapit Crematorium here at 10am on Saturday.
