An Indonesian maid hanged herself after failing an English-language entry test three times.

Sulastri Wardoyo, 26, was discovered hanging from a shower head in a toilet at a maid hostel in Singapore on May 30.

According to The Straits Times, the staff who discovered her said her heart stopped three times as paramedics tried to resuscitate her.

She was warded in the intensive care unit of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and is said to have suffered brain-damage after her suicide attempt.

She arrived early last week and was housed by employment agency Budget Maid in a hostel in the north of Singapore.

It was reported that she took the Foreign Domestic Worker Entry Test last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday but failed every time.

Hostel staff told The Straits Times that she was depressed afer failing the tests.

All new maids have to pass written test within three days of their arrival here. They have to leave Singapore if they fail the test but they can return to retake it.

A spokesman for the Indonesian embassy told Wanbao that the maid's body will be transported to her hometown on Friday.

The spokesman said that Sulastri's family had already been informed of her death but because they were unable to travel to Singapore, the embassy will be in charge of claiming Ms Sulastri's body.

It is a crime in Singapore to attempt suicide.
