PETALING JAYA: The MyKad will be more durable and of better quality after a scheduled upgrade in July, said the Home Ministry.
“We are taking the matter very seriously and will ensure that the chip's quality is improved,” Deputy Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop said in an interview.
It had been reported last week that chip failure was the main cause of MyKad replacements in the country.
The department had confirmed that 1,018,698 of the 2,158,621 applications for MyKad replacements received last year were due to faulty chips.
“The smart chip contains complex electrical and wiring components, which are sensitive to stress, heat and humidity,” its director-generalDatuk Alwi Ibrahim said in a statement yesterday, adding that the department had requested that the vendor conduct continuous research and development on the chip's durability.
He said the department had also instructed the vendor to upgrade the chips with new mould designs and stronger wire bonding.
“Reliability tests will be conducted on the new chips,” Alwi said, adding that a semi-conductor specialist has been hired to solve the problem.
