Baby dies from morphine in breast milk

Stephanie Greene (left) is awaiting a bond hearing. Autopsy results showed high levels of morphine in baby Alexis' blood
US authorities say an infant girl died from a lethal dose of morphine that was in her mother's breast milk.

The mother, 37-year-old Stephanie Greene, was charged Friday with homicide by child abuse.

Investigators say Greene's 6-week-old daughter, Alexis, was found dead in her parents' bed in November 2010.

Autopsy results showed high levels of morphine in the child's blood.

Authorities say the painkiller got into Greene's breast milk after she took pills and used patches containing morphine constantly since the baby's birth.

Investigators say she illegally obtained the drugs at least 38 times in less than two years.

Greene was awaiting a bond hearing.

Her husband refused to speak with an Associated Press reporter or give her attorney's name when reached by phone.

Baby killed in microwave, mum held

A 29-year-old mother in the US has been arrested following an investigation found her six-week-old baby most likely died from burns suffered in a microwave oven.

Ka Yang, of Sacramento, California is being held without bail in Sacramento County Jail after an investigation found her baby likely died from burns suffered in a microwave oven.

The baby, Mirabelle Thao-Lo, was found dead in her home with "extensive thermal injuries" on March 17.

"It's unthinkable," said Norm Leong, Sacramento Police Department spokesman.

"Everyone was stunned at the cause of death. Even the detectives were shocked."

She had some really deep tissue burns, fourth-degree burns. It was probably the worst case I've seen," said Sacramento County Coroner's Office spokesman Ed Smith.

Early on, detectives speculated that a household appliance, perhaps the microwave, caused the burns, Leong said.

But the rarity of such cases made the investigation more difficult and time-consuming, he said.

Investigators found only two other cases of infants killed in microwaves and a third case of a baby who was burned but survived, he said.

The arrest took three months because investigators had to pinpoint what they believed was the cause of death by looking at similar cases, including ones in Ohio, Texas and Virginia.

Yang's three young boys, who are all under the age of 7, have since been removed from the home by child welfare workers.

Officer Laura Peck said Yang's motive it unknown. No lawyer was listed for the woman.

"We wouldn't assess her mental condition," said Peck.

"That will be up to the court system. The bottom line is no one knows what happened in that house but her and the little baby."

Dad points gun at daughter's teacher

A disgruntled dad in Kuala Lumpur pointed a gun at a primary school teacher for reportedly trying to discipline his daughter.

The teacher has allegedly hit his daughter on the head with a ruler, reports Harian Metro.

Apparently, this was not the first time the father, who is in his late 30s, had attacked a teacher in his daughter's school.

He was alleged to have attacked another teacher with a shotgun three months ago.

In the latest incident, the man came and verbally attacked the teacher while he was having breakfast at the school canteen.

Although the teacher apologised, the father was still not satisfied and pointed a gun to the man's head.

Kuala Lumpur police official Khairi Arasa confirmed the case.

Dad influences daughters' sexual behaviour

Girls' decisions about sex are significantly influenced by their father’s parenting skills, a new study shows.

“Girls who receive lower quality fathering tend to engage in more risky sexual behaviour - sex without a condom, having sex while drunk, multiple sexual partners and becoming pregnant before age 19 - in adolescence,” said Bruce J. Ellis of the University of Arizona Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences, who led the research to be published in the journal of Development and Psychopathology.

Ellis said taking both genetic effects and family dynamics, the results demonstrated a cause-and-effect relationship - different amount of exposure to different kinds of fathers altered daughters’ sexual behaviour.

“We know that poor fathering and daughters’ risky sexual behaviour go together, but we haven’t known why and haven’t known how. Our study was meant to figure out that issue,” he said.

Ellis and his team developed a methodology to test for the impact of fathers on their daughters’ sexual risk-taking.

They looked at 59 pairs of sisters from families in which the parents had divorced and the father moved out and compared with 42 pairs of sisters from intact families.

MCMC: 41 Govt websites disrupted at various levels

CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) confirmed Thursday that there were attempts to hack several Malaysian government websites, including its website,www.skmm.gov.my
"Regarding the threat by unknown hackers to attack websites with the .gov.my domain, there were indeed attempts to hack several Malaysian government websites.
"These attacks started at approximately 11.30pm, on Wednesday, June 15. We are able to confirm that 51 .gov.my websites were attacked and there has been disruption at various levels to at least 41 of those websites.
"However, we do not expect the overall recovery to these websites to take long as most websites have already recovered from the attack.
"Our monitoring of the situation showed that there was a reduced level of attacks by 4.00am this morning (Thursday) and upon further evaluation, so far we gauge that there has been little impact on Malaysian users as a result of this attack.
"MCMC's Network Security Centre has been making concerted efforts to mitigate the attacks around the clock and will continue to work with other enforcement agencies and security experts as well service providers to monitor the situation.
"The public is advised to report any information they may have regarding the identity of these hackers as the act to disrupt network services is a serious offence, which is punishable by law," MCMC said in a statement.
It added that the attempt to hack MCMC's website was not successful.

Websites defaced before deadline set by hacker group

PETALING JAYA: Local websites have been hacked ahead of the deadline set by a foreign-based hacker group, Anonymous, that said it would attack the Malaysian Government portal at 3.30am today.
On the micro-blogging site Twitter yesterday evening, there were reports that 27 sites in total had been hacked.
But these were not named and there was no confirmation from the authorities as to the accuracy of the tweets.
Among the sites known to have been hacked was the Sabah Tourism website, www.sabahtourism.com. The defaced site was spotted early yesterday by the chief executive of a company that organises security conferences.
“A portion of the website was deleted when I saw it,” said Dhillon Andrew Kannabhiran, who heads Hack In The Box (M) Sdn Bhd. “I had just returned from an overseas trip.”
The Sabah Tourism website has since gone offline.
F-Secure Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd, a computer security software company, corroborated Dhillon's account.
Goh Su Gim, its security adviser for Asia, said the Sabah Tourism site was compromised.
“Worse still, the data from 392 user accounts were stolen from the site and released to the public,” he said.
The data that was posted online were e-mail addresses and passwords.
On the webpage where the hackers posted the data, they claimed they had the details of more than 3,400 users from the Sabah Tourism site, but they were only exposing the 392.
The hackers also claimed to be Anonymous members and that they meant no harm, and only wanted to show the vulnerability of this site.
According to Dhillon, the www.tourmalaysia.com.my site was also hacked and defaced yesterday. He had checked the site after viewing the hacked Sabah Tourism website. It was defaced with words that included “Deface by Kambeng Merah: Credit to DarkJawa.”
Another website hacked was www.cidb.gov.my, which belongs to the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).
It was defaced with a long message that scolded the Government for censoring the Internet. However, a while later, the site was back to normal.
Dhillion said he believed these sites may not have been hacked by Anonymous.
“The hacker group is into co-ordinated attacks and keeps to its word when it comes to launching its attacks,” he said. “These are likely independent hackers taking advantage of the publicity.”
CyberSecurity Malaysia, responsible for the nation's borders in cyberspace, confirmed that several websites were hacked. But it declined to say how many and which were the sites.
“At present, we are not able to elaborate further,” said Lt Col (Rtd) Datuk Husin Jazri, chief executive officer of CyberSecurity.
He said rectification works were being conducted by the relevant authorities to address the situation.
Anonymous had threatened to hack the www.malaysia.gov.my portal to protest against the Government's censorship of the Internet and because Malaysia had blocked 10 filesharing sites.
These sites were among the most visited by Malaysians to illegally download movies.

Some Malaysian websites are offline

PETALING JAYA: The www.malaysia.gov.my portal targeted for attack at 3.30am today by a foreign-based hacker group has been offline since midnight. Several other Malaysian Government websites are also offline.
Speculation is rife on blogs and Twitter, the micro-blogging site, with some believing that the hacker group that calls itself Anonymous has launched a distributed denial-of-service attack on the websites.
Others, however, seem equally sure that local authorities have unplugged the servers of these sites, either in an attempt to spoil Anonymous' plan, or to buy more time for website security to be upgraded before putting the sites back online.
Securitynewsdaily.com posted that the malaysia.gov.my website became unresponsive around midnight, most likely due to a denial-of-service attack.
This method of attack involves bombarding the website with an ever increasing amount of requests that it eventually becomes unable to handle all the queries and crashes.
On Twitter, some said they don't believe it was due to plug-pulling, while others stated that it was. One person tweeted that he received e-mail messages advising him to switch off servers, but did not provide more details when contacted through Twitter.
The other government websites that were offline includewww.parlimen.gov.mywww.rmp.gov.my (Royal Malaysian Police),www.treasury.gov.my (Ministry of Finance), and www.mocat.gov.my(Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism).
But the Parliament, Treasury and Police websites came back up before 9am.
Among the unaffected are the websites belonging to the Ministry of Defence, Department of Islamic Development, the Election Commission, and Tourism Malaysia.
Anonymous had threatened to hack the malaysia.gov.my portal to protest against the Malaysian Government's censorship of the Internet, movies and TV shows. And because Malaysia had banned and called for the blocking of 10 filesharing sites. These sites were among the most visited by Malaysians to illegally download movies.

Nasra Yussef Mohammed Al Enezi, 24, had been sentenced to death by a lower and appeals courts for the apparent act of revenge against her husband for taking a second wife.

Her husband first reaction to the court sentence was :"Let her go to hell," according to the Kuwaiti papers.

"This is a 100 per cent fair verdict. Once she is executed, I will again go to the families of all the victims and offer condolence."

"I can sleep with a clear conscience from now on as I had been afraid that the court might not sentence her to death," her husband, Zayed Dafiri said.

Nasra was not present at court when the verdict was issued. Death sentences in Kuwait are usually carried out by hanging but must first be ratified by the Emir.

According to local media reports of the arson attack, Nasra had wanted to avenge her husband's 'bad treatment' to her.

Teen hacks dad to death with axe

Guenevere Hudnall,19, accused of hacking her father to death while he was sleeping.
Guenevere Hudnall,19, accused of hacking her father to death while he was sleeping.

A teen in the United States allegedly hacked her dad to death so she could claim social security benefits.

When her father fell asleep, the teenager allegedly used a pickaxe to bludgeon him to death with a series of blows to the head and chest, according to The Daily Mail.

The daughter Guenevere Hudnall, 19, is accused of killing her dad in Florida with the help of her mother Stephanie.

The mother and daughter are alleged to have plotted the murder of 51-year-old William Hudnall at his trailer home in Hawthorne, Florida.

Both women were unemployed and their trailer home was in the process of going into foreclosure.

Police said Guenevere had offered to kill her father if her mother, who was estranged from her husband, drove her to his home.

Guenevere was dropped off at her father's home last Wednesday night, and the pair talked for several hours.

When her father fell asleep the teenager is alleged to have used a pickaxe to bludgeon him to death with a series of blows to the head and chest.

According to an arrest report when Hudnall made some noises his daughter continued to strike him until he was silent.

“The victim (William) continued to make noise so she (Guenevere) struck him with the axe until he was quiet to make sure he was dead,” wrote Sheriff's Detective Sandra Myers.

To make the murder appear to be a part of a break-in, Guenevere threw mail on the living room floor, investigators said.

She drove back to her mother's home in her father's truck and destroyed other evidence from the crime scene.

Both mother and daugher were charged with premeditated murder.

Obedient Wives Club: ‘You’re mistaken’ - HOT TOPIC

Obedient Wives Club clari fies ‘better than a first-class prostitute’ statement. Says it was referring to elite types and not street hookers! But practical sex lessons are out.
Wednesday, June 8th, 2011 11:27:00
RAWANG: “OUR noble intention has been unfairly misinterpreted.”
That's the stance of the now infamous Obedient Wives Club (OWC) – launched only four days ago – which felt that its proclamation that wives should serve their husbands “better than a first-class prostitute” was taken in the wrong context.
Ever since the club’s vice-president, Dr Rohaya Mohamed, made the controversial statement last Saturday, it has been savaged and subjected to ridicule by the Press, women’s groups and religious bodies locally and internationally.
Dr Rohaya’s call was viewed by most as denigrating, as it painted a picture that women should always play a subservient role in a marriage.
The Malay Mail visited Bandar Country Homes in Rawang, where Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd – the multi-business corporation that runs OWC – is based and spoke with the club’s national director Fauziah Ariffin.
“I have been receiving non-stop calls since the launch,” said the jovial 40-something Fauziah, just after she hung up on a phone conversation with Time magazine, which were seeking to interview her.
“I believe we have been misunderstood and misinterpreted. When we said that husbands should treat their wives like first-class prostitutes, we were not putting wives on the same level with prostitutes. We are talking about first-class elite types, not street hooker types.
"Our wives provide men with top-level service. However, ordinary prostitutes can only provide good sex, but not love and affection which only a wife can provide.
“Hence, as wives, we must treat our husbands better. It’s not just in bed, but everything that a wife can offer. Optimise your role. If we provide our husbands more than a prostitute can give, then our husbands will not go out looking for it.”
Fauziah also argued that obedient wives will not cause husbands to take their partner for granted, but in fact, it will make them better husbands.
“When a husband comes home and receives good treatment from the wife, they become better and more loving husbands. Why would they treat their spouse badly if they are treated well?” she said.
“I also read somewhere that footballers often engage in sex with their partners or prostitutes before a match as this will boost their confidence. Likewise, when a husband gets a healthy dose of good sex they become motivated at work.”
Fauziah stressed that in Islam, there are four things that wives must do to enter heaven: to pray, to fast during Ramadan, to protect their chastity, and to be obedient wives – and it is often the fourth aspect that modern wives neglect.
She clarified that the club will not be giving out practical sex lessons.
“Of course not! There won’t be practical sex classes. That’s haram.”
She was asked to explain another controversial statement by Dr Rohaya earlier, that the club would provide bedroom lessons to the OWC's 1,000 members.
Fauziah said their lessons will consist of motivational talks and discussions among the members. The talks will be conducted by her, Dr Rohaya, and eight other committee members.
“Dr Rohaya is a counsellor and she always has people, young and old, coming to her and seeking advice about their love lives. Even husbands come to her!”
The club was first introduced in Amman, Jordan on May 1, before it was launched in Malaysia last week.
On June 18, the club will launch its chapter in Jakarta, Indonesia.
"There are plans to spread the club to Europe," said Fauziah, adding that Dr Rohaya is currently in Paris to organise talks in the French capital.

'Husbands come first'

Fauziah Ariffin
FAUZIAH: Should not dismiss sex as unimportant
MEMBERS of the Obedient Wives Club (OWC) feel the hullabaloo on their newly-formed group is misplaced.
They told The Malay Mail they found nothing wrong with their club and its inception was fully justified.
“The modern wife seems to forget that it is her responsibility to keep the husband satisfied. They are too engrossed with their own career and leisure, they neglect their true responsibility,” said a member who wished to be identified as Mariam.
“Perhaps our club will help remind women of our task as wives. In Islam, it is an obligation for wives to obey their husbands, so I don’t find anything wrong with the club.”
Another member, who preferred anonymity, said she was not ashamed to join the club.
"There is nothing controversial about our noble movement as people should not be ashamed to speak up or seek advice from others to improve our sex lives," she said.
"Club members exchange information, experiences and ideas with each other without feeling embarrassed."
OWC has also been staunchly supported by some men.
“Ever since the launch, OWC offices in Rawang have been visited by so many people, including the Press seeking interviews with club members,” said a male religious teacher at the headquarters of the club, Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd.
“What is wrong with asking wives to obey their husbands? This is a practice that dates back to ancient times.”

Hunger leads to anger

"A HUNGRY man is an angry man," said Obedient Wives Club coordinator Fauziah Ariffin in explaining why an active sex life is important in a marriage.
She said that when there is lack of sex from wives in a marriage, the husbands would seek sex elsewhere, including from prostitutes, and even rape and incest.
"If a man has his own 'angel' (bidadari) at home, the one who looks after him and satisfy his every need, logically, would he be looking for others?" asked Fauziah.
"In our society, wives often feel sex is a taboo subject, hence their negligence in addressing the sexual matter in their marriage."
Fauziah said a marriage do not revolve around sex only, but it plays a major role between husband and wife.
"We have to look at this reality with an open mind and should not dismiss sex as unimportant, just because we are shy to confront it."
Fauziah said in a modern society, working wives have little choice but to balance their work with personal life.
"This is the challenge which modern women have to embrace, to be an ideal Muslim wife. If she struggles and triumphs through all these challenges, I believe she will be rewarded by her husband.

Media frenzy

OBEDIENT Wives Club national director Fauziah Ariffin has been receiving incessant calls from local and foreign media since the club's national launch on Saturday.
"TIME magazine just asked whether I could be interviewed soon," said Fauziah, adding she recently had a Skype (Internet web-conferencing service) with BBC-UK.
She said local journalists have been coming to Rawang in droves, where Global Ikhwan is based, over the past 72 hours.
"The attention has been massive.
"But we don't mind giving our take on the matter."

Ikhwan has it all

Global Ikhwan
THOSE who visit the commercial area along Jalan Desa 9 at Bandar Country Homes in Rawang, can’t help but notice that most of the business signboards bear the name “Ikhwan”.
This is where the many businesses of Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd – a multi-national conglomerate formed by ex-members of the banned Al-Arqam group – are based.
There are all kinds of trading to be found here, from bakeries and sundry shops to boutiques and medical clinics.
Besides the newly-launched Obedient Wives Club, Global Ikhwan also made international headlines not too long ago when it formed the controversial Ikhwan Polygamy Club in 2009, which encourages husbands to take more than one wife to satisfy their masculine desires.

Uncommon Sense: Uncivil obedience

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011 11:09:00
Uncommon
I CANNOT believe how the issue of the ‘Kelab Isteri Taat’ (directly translated as ‘Obedient Wives Club’ or OWC) has grown into such a huge firestorm the last week or so.
As those following the story may have read, Dr Rohaya Mohamad, the vice-president of the now-world-infamous club, reportedly said something along the lines of “wives must learn to satisfy their husbands’ sexual needs to prevent him from seeking other women”. She was also quoted as saying that part of the club’s goals is to educate women how to please their husbands “like a first class prostitute”.
Naturally, such politically incorrect statements did not sit too kindly with a lot of people, especially women. The club’s stand is widely seen as taking a few steps backwards in the long-fought battle for women’s rights and gender equality.
Going by the fiery comments and condemnations the OWC had drawn, it seemed pretty obvious among many the club’s very existence is unacceptable in a modern, progressive world.
Assuming, of course, that everything reported before this was NOT taken out of context or misquoted, the anger is fully justified.
A wife should not be held accountable if her husband strays.
He’s the bad guy, he betrayed her trust and his sacred vow to commit only to her.
Blaming the wife as ‘not obedient or sexually ful filling enough’ for his infidelity is not only grossly unfair, it is also quite frankly, downright stupid.
Such quick escape is a scrotumless way of solving problems many selfish people take.
Instead of making the effort to solve his marital problems, he looks outside for distractions, ending up inviting more problems.
Instead of facing the painful issues and making difficult decisions, he blames everyone else and absolves himself from guilt.
Such actions also degrade both women and men, and the whole idea of marriage itself. It is absolutely insulting to suggest women are nothing but sexual objects whose sole purpose in life is to make their men ‘happy’.
It is equally insulting to say that men are mindless animals who are driven only by their lust.
Women are not, and should not, behave like submissive whores, and men are not, and should not, behave like brainless, horny swine.
So it’s not fair to even insinuate those negative stereotypes.
What’s worse is that such a notion would drive a wedge between good-thinking women and men. It feeds the polar opposite sides of the spectrum — lusty and irresponsible men go ‘Yay!’ at the suggestion, taking it as a licence to go further astray, while men-hating women take it as fuel to further bash all men, good and bad.
While it makes for good jokes and heated debates, it doesn’t serve any good purpose.
Let’s just all calm down and try to sift through all the angst and name-calling.
First of all, let’s accept that despite our di fferences, men and women are equal in many, many ways, especially in this age of enlightenment. Most times, we look for the same things — happiness, love, security, comfort, companionship, compassion, passion, sense of belonging, purpose and other good things.
On the flip side, both men and women also share similar weaknesses — pride, lust, anger, greed, envy and so on. We both do good, and we both make the same mistakes. Meaning, both men AND women fall to  temptations, both cheat, and sadly, both become victims.
Secondly, whatever the statements and suggestions the OWC made, while probably based on some valid points, are severely one-sided and PR-unfriendly, which are detrimental not only to society, but also to their own cause.
For example, the word ‘obedient’ is hardly an appropriate tag these days. ‘Obedient’ traditionally carries a submissive or subjugated context, and in the age and society where there are more female graduates than males, you can’t expect it to be accepted, can you? For goodness sake, there are so many other, more friendly terms out there — here’s a simple one: ‘Good’. Or the Malay equivalent: ‘Mithali’, which connotes kind, responsible, understanding, or model. We’ve used ‘mithali’ on mothers, fathers, children … why not wives?
And while you’re at it, why limit it to a just a wives club — include the husbands! Marriage is a two-way relationship, so make it a ‘Mithali Spouses Club’. That’s because if you want to push for obedient wives, it has to be coupled with responsible husbands, who are just as obedient to their commitments and promises.
Additionally, if you want to provide ‘tips and lessons’ for bedroom activities, it’s not just the wives who need lessons, husbands have a lot to learn too in that department, yes?
So I say, let’s just take a chill pill and look at what we all want, happy marriages and families, peace and harmony (or at least, less angst) between the sexes, respect, dignity and fairness. We need each other, so let’s ignore all the idiocy, and take the positive things from this ugly and unnecessary episode and move on.
